THE OPPORTUNITY
The Finance Director, Canada will report to the President with functional reporting to the Global Lead in Finance and is responsible for the overall management, leadership, and direction of the Finance Department and Shared Services Team for Canada.
This position is responsible for all aspects of accounting and finance and shared services in Canada including, but not limited to, accounts payable, accounts receivable, monthly and year end financial reporting, systems integration, year end audits and other shared service activities such as information technology. This position operates at a strategic level while guiding and mentoring the day to day activities of their team. This role supports operations by providing insight into operations through data with a goal to create efficiencies and to support growth of the business.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as a business partner to the President, by assessing organizational performance against both the annual budget and long-term strategy; develop tools and reports to provide critical financial and operational information and actionable recommendations on strategy, operations, and financial performance to the President
- Direct, manage, and ensure optimal functionality and service delivery of multifunctional team including Accounting and Shared Services
- Oversee the management and coordination of all financial reporting activities for a business that has multiple operating companies including: organization revenue/expense and balance sheet reports, reports to funding agencies, corporate required reporting and monitoring organization budgets
- Monitor financial performance for Canada by measuring and analyzing results; proposing corrective actions by identifying profit improvement plans, revenue gaps, and office level profitability improvements; provide financial data and reports to senior management staff
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process to ensure all deadlines are met, data accuracy is achieved, and all departments are working together
- Accomplish Finance strategies by determining and enforcing accountabilities; communicating and enforcing values, polices, and procedures; implementing recruitment, training, coaching, counseling, disciplinary, and communication programs; define and set goals and initiatives ensuring all departments are running efficiently with optimal processes
- Drive overall process improvement initiatives for all functional departments to ensure accuracy of reporting results, compliance with internal and external requirements, customer service to both internal and external stakeholders, and department level efficiency
- Develop, implement, and maintain adequate controls and ensure they are being followed by verifying substantiating documentation
- Lead and manage the required annual audits including work paper preparation, analysis, research, and audit support meeting the required deadlines
- Work with Corporate staff to respond to inquiries and meet deadlines as required, follow required processes and policies, and ensure alignment in communication
- Must maintain a strong focus on cross functional teamwork with both internal and external stakeholders
- Follow and enforce the Company required safe work practices and procedures at all times
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, professionalism, and promote a positive customer service attitude internally and externally
- Enforce and abide the requirements of safe operation and personal safety using required Personal Protective Equipment and Safe Practices per company policy
- Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulations and Company policy at all times
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Leadership Responsibilities
- Communicate job expectations; plan, monitor, and appraise job results in partnership with human resources; coach, counsel, and discipline employees; develop, coordinate, and enforce systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards
- Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees
- Maintain a safe, secure, and legal work environment for all staff ensuring all company policies are being followed
- Review, validate, and approve reporting employees’ timesheet and reports
FIRST YEAR – MEASURES OF SUCCESS
- Ensure on-time reporting with great accuracy allowing for operations to run effectively by utilizing the data and information for operational business decision-making
- Establish and stabilize SAP processes allowing for clean integration of the businesses into SAP
- Build solid, trusting, respectful relationships with the team and leadership within Canada and at a Global level
THE INDIVIDUAL
Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the company and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience, and attributes:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance required
- CPA designation or equivalent
- Master’s Degree would be considered an asset
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in a senior financial management role, partnering with executive/ senior level staff
- 5+ years of experience in managing Accounting, Tax, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable Departments
- Public accounting experience preferred, including IFRS and US GAAP experience
- Experience with leading shared services and working with outsourced vendors
- Extensive SAP experience required
Competencies and Knowledge
- Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data
- Knowledge of monthly and annual Accounting close process
- Knowledge of standard business operating financial and accounting reports
- Knowledge of Canadian tax law including both federal and provincial taxes
- Knowledge of process mapping, planning, and improvement
- Ability to multi-task and properly execute multiple simultaneous assignments under pressure and tight deadlines
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
- Ability to rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and experience in strategic planning and execution is required
