Job Description
THE ORGANIZATION
Our client, a local law firm with longevity in business in Edmonton, has a need for a Controller. This organization is highly established, has a strong reputation in market and continues to grow and thrive. As this is a confidential search, details on the organization will be released only to those short-listed for the opportunity.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Controller will report directly to the Partners and will be an active part of the firm’s management team. This position will be responsible for the overall financial operations of the firm and will provide accurate and timely financial information to the Partners including budgeting, forecasting, regular monthly financial reporting, and analysis as required.
Ideally, the successful applicant will be an individual with extensive experience and knowledge of corporate accounting and financial management within a law firm or professional organization. This role will have a small team of direct reports and will work closely with management on establishing and maintaining standardization of financial procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports (monthly and quarterly)
- Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures
- Work with the external auditors in the development of the annual audit plan and manage the execution of the annual audit, including oversight for preparation of the audited financial statements and all supporting working papers
- Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions
- Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation, and prepare the annual budget in consultation with Partners
- Provide leadership to current accounting team
- Responsible for management of monthly trust audits
- Responsible for directing and planning the day-to-day operations of group benefit programs
- Review, establish and monitor internal controls to protect the firm and ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to policies of the firm
- Provide advice and guidance on all business and finance matters including financial systems, analysis, and reporting as these relate to the firm’s operations
- Execute monthly client billing and answer any client inquiries concerning the invoices
- Prepare staff and attorney payroll and tax filings
- Process accounts receivable and accounts payable
- Other duties and assignments as required

- Continuity in the financial management of the firm with minimal interruption during transition
- Accuracy in reporting is demonstrated providing a sense of trust and confidence for the Partners
THE INDIVIDUAL
Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of our client and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following education, experience, and personal attributes:
Education
- CPA designation or equivalent
- Post-secondary education in business, accounting finance or a related field is required
Experience
- Minimum of 10 years experience in all aspects of corporate accounting and financial management, preferably in a law firm or other professional organization
- Experience with the Law Society of Alberta accounting rules considered an asset
- Knowledge and experience with trust accounts and audit of those accounts
