THE OPPORTUNITY

The Estimator will report into the Chief Operating Officer and is responsible for accurate estimating of projects and fostering a strong working relationship with the project management group. This will be achieved through collaboration and teamwork with a diverse group of stakeholders.  At Kemway the customer experience is paramount to success and with that, being on-time and on budget are critical. This position maintains excellent communication and relationships between all parties, adheres to organizational policies, and maintains a strong commitment to Kemway’s safety program. The Estimator represents and promotes the company and its core values with honesty and integrity.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creation of tender packages and scopes of work
  • Consult with Project Managers with regards to general conditions, construction methodology and schedules during the Tender/Pre-Construction process
  • Interpret documentation, specifications, and design drawings to define scope/contents of estimates
  • Review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials
  • Liaise with subcontractors for tender and follow-up
  • Review tenders from sub-contractors and provide recommendations
  • Review estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness, prior to formal quotation
  • Participate in tender closings
  • Prepare cost estimates on conceptual design-build or general tender work
  • Perform preliminary and detailed quantity take-offs from drawings and specifications for all divisions with estimating software program
  • Inform project team of any risks which may affect the project from a cost or schedule perspective
  • Assist project management team with bid scope review and subcontractor negotiations
  • Assist project management team with change order reviews and submittals
  • Maintain awareness of current marketplace and trends to gain and maintain our competitive advantage and develop effective bid strategies
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, public and project teams
  • Continually contribute to building backlog of profitable work
  • Occupational health & safety and the environment
  • Manage, mitigate, and eliminate risk

FIRST YEAR – MEASURES OF SUCCESS

  • Full integration into the Project Management & Field Operations team as a valued business partner
  • Effective standardization of estimating processes for the organization
  • Establish strong relationships with Kemway’s current and future trade partners
  • Have a strong understanding of the current market in the greater Edmonton region

 

THE INDIVIDUAL

Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of Kemway Builders and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience, and attributes:


Education

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in Civil Engineering, Architectural or Construction Management or equivalent

 

Experience

  • A minimum of 2-5 years of related estimating experience, ideally with a general contractor and/or developer, with preference given to commercial experience over residential
  • Experience working for a General Contractor considered an asset
  • Familiarity with drawing reviews, contract administration, document management, scheduling software
  • Experience working through complex pre-construction contracts

 

Competencies and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take off procedures, sub-trade procurement, pricing and bid closing procedures
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with a variety of people and in a team environment
  • Above-average mathematical skills, knowledge of industry standards, building codes, city regulations and construction materials
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple priorities – excellent organization and planning skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proven ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Excel and a solid knowledge base of other core Microsoft Office Suite products. Experience with MS Project is an asset
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
