THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer in Edmonton, the VP, Finance will work closely with the Executive Leadership Team (“ELT”) in ensuring the organization achieves its short- and long-term strategic goals. The VP, Finance is responsible for the financial health of the organization, building the financial strategy to align to the organizational vision, building strong processes, developing, and mentoring a team of six to eight people, overseeing the trust fund, and system automation to improve efficiencies including turnaround time on reporting. The position provides financial leadership by managing budgets, overseeing all accounting and finance functions, conducting forecast analysis, and monitoring corporate credit while playing a key role in long-term strategic decision-making processes that affect the organization’s profitability.

As VP Finance, you will oversee the accounting and finance operations for four entities including a for-profit pharmacy, a non-profit benefit organization, a national entity, and a trust with each being represented by a Board. You will be the financial advisor to the CEO for Board reporting, and you will represent OpenCircle at Board Committee meetings, 6 in total. External relationships may include interacting with clients, vendors, government bodies, and partners.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the ELT to develop cost budgets for all operational aspects of the organization including project budgets, forecasts, and long-term strategic plans.
  • Report on a regular basis the organization’s status against, and ability to meet, its strategic and operational objectives.
  • Collect and analyze cost data versus budget for ascertaining financial performance and risk assessments for all entities.
  • Prepare reports and evaluations for individual projects.
  • Develop accounting policies and procedures relevant to accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and project tracking.
  • Create and enforce business rules for all financial reporting.
  • Communicate and collaborate with departmental leaders to remain informed of spending, budgeting, reports, and evaluation.
  • Monitor legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to financial reporting.
  • Analyze variable costs and make budget adjustments as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with provincial and federal government agencies as well as consultancy firms and auditors.
  • Facilitate and oversee auditing conducted by third parties to ensure effective resolution and swift closure of auditing activities.
  • Lead and supervise the finance and accounting department on accounting, reporting, internal controls, budgeting, and other financial matters.
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term financial plans and forecasts in accordance with business goals and objectives.
  • Investigate variances in budgets, reporting, internal controls, and general accounting; deploy measures to resolve variances.
  • Provide general advice to CEO on all financial matters.

  • Lead the team in a meaningful way creating a culture that is focused on servicing the organization and membership with a service centric attitude.
  • Modernize and automate systems and processes to allow for more efficient turnaround with month end close and financial reporting.
  • Work alongside operations to create efficiencies with the budgeting process including variance analysis in support of operational decision making.
  • Navigate change in an organization that is elevating its systems and processes to drive towards its future vision state.

 

THE INDIVIDUAL

Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the objectives of OpenCircle and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following education, experience, and personal attributes:

 

Education

  • University degree in Accounting, Business or Finance; an MBA, CPA or CMA designation is required.

 

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience operating as a senior financial leader in a mid-sized operation, having been exposed to complex organizational structure and/or subsidiary company operations.
  • Experience in non-profits, a membership organization and/or trust fund management is an asset.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge in dealing with accounting systems, budgets, internal controls, business planning, and asset management.
  • Strong knowledge of CRA rules and legislation specifically as it applies to the Trustee Act.
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in pressure situations with a calm and steady demeanor.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Excellent teamwork and team building skills.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners, and government agencies.
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity suite.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
OpenCircle works in a hybrid work environment in which you will work 4 days in the office with 1 designated day to work differently.
